First (only) visit: April 2005
I found Quito an unattractive city, made all the more ominous by demonstrations when I was there, which led to the fall of the government 10 days later. Built on hills at a high altitude, which make the landscape winning, this is perhaps my least favourite big Latin capital, somehow it lacks charm. You have to go to the Equator, of course, a half hour ride from the town, and stand on both hemispheres. The museum here will open your eyes to the richness of the tribes in this country: but that is one thing I may ever explore in depth.
Highlight: The Equator experience.
