Harry's Trails Around The World

Harry Travels World

Cambodia

First visit: July 1996 Subsequent visit: December 2008 Visited: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap Back in 1996, Phnom Penh was just standing on its feet, and the Buddhist monks clad in orange robes, the motorbikes, the river setting and the museum of the horrors of the Khmer Rouge all made a huge impact on me as an inexperienced traveller...at the time Cambodia was as 'out of it' as I had gone. 12 years later, a repeat visit was very disappointing. Siem Reap was utterly commercialised, while Phnom Penh now filled with tourists and somehow lacking in the charm that had once made it special. C'est la vie, I suppose. Though the people still did seem rather friendly but no longer that innocent. Highlight: Temples by the river in Phnom Penh
