First visit: April 1972 (40 days old baby)
Subsequently place of residence until 1993 and never missed a year
Visited (mainland): every municipality 'nomos', especially Thessaloniki, Kavala, Ioannina, Lamia, Nafplion, Patras, Delphi, Kalamata, Komotini, Xanthi, Aleksandroupolis.
The Greek mainland is also its heartland and tends to be less discovered by tourists, which may be a good thing. I like the Peloponnese less, perhaps because the people have a bad reputation, even though Greece's first capital Nafplion is lovely. The north, especially mountainous Epirus is perhaps by favourite as a whole, poorer than most but retaining classical charm. And the areas of Macedonia and Thrace still show signs of Ottoman occupation, making them partially non-European, which may also be a good thing.
Highlight: Meteora, monasteries carved on high rocks, one of the wonders of the world as far as I am concerned.
Rank: 51/217 - Just missing the Top 50.
