First (only) visit: April 2007
Lonely planet says that Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is a place for hedonists, and in many ways this is true. At a high altitude, with a cool breeze, a welcoming sun, lovely Italian-style architecture, friendly but shy people and a mix of Christian and Muslim, it will be hard not to fall in love with this place and want to stroll around incessantly. It seems the political situation is rather complex (in want of a better word) but as a tourist, you will never really feel this.
Highlight: The grand Italian buildings that will have you think you are on the wrong continent!
