First visit: January 2002 Subsequent visit: April 2005 Visited: Santo Domingo An unlucky place for me, the first time I landed with severe poisoning and saw nothing apart from the hotel room in what was the most agonising night of my life so far. I made it again, and discovered a very interesting colonial town, the first to be established in the new world. The population is varied, the standard higher than expected and, on the whole, this is a country worth exploring more than the resorts that are offered to the hordes. Highlight: Observing the locals at work and play on the main pedestrian area of the capital.
