I actually rather enjoyed Douala, which also offers one of the most unparalleled hassles in terms of airport experiences. However the down, though it is grotty and noisy, has pep, and it seems pretty safe to walk around merrily. For a central African place, the pinnacle of civilisation, plus there are French gateaux around to save you!
Highlight: The Islamic part of town, which buzzes.
