First (only) visit: September 2002
Visited: Baku
Not bad at all, this odd combination of Soviet and Turkic-Islamic somehow has all the right elements to give the tourist a nice spin. The old town is small but amusingly delapidated, as is the walk by the Caspian. The modern part of town is rather unexpectedly jazzy and hip. Hardly a holiday destination, but for an eccentric variation which is not too offbeat, this is a good choice.
Highlight: Central Baku
